Lot overview

Sun dried robusta from Kolaka in Southeast Sulawesi at 300 to 800 m, machine hulled and gravity table sorted, screened to 16 up for EK-1 contracts or 13 up for volume. Specified by soluble and extract manufacturers optimising yield per tonne, usually at 4a or 4b, and by roasters wanting maximum body in a dark blend at Grade 1 or 2.

Who buys this lot

Soluble coffee plants and liquid extract producers, where caffeine and density drive yield per tonne and 4a or 4b is the usual buy, and roasters building the darkest end of an espresso range, who take Grade 1 or 2 at screen 16 up. Kolaka is dense and heavy, and at that screen it roasts evenly enough for a dedicated dark profile rather than only as a blend filler.

Grading and density sorting

Sun dried, machine hulled, then gravity table sorted so the density spread narrows, which matters more for extraction than for cup. A 300 g count sets the grade under SNI 01-2907, from 11 defect values or fewer at Grade 1 to 151 to 225 at Grade 6, and screen is contracted separately at 16 up for EK-1 or 13 up for volume. Coffee is re-dried to 12.5% moisture maximum with a final check in Jakarta before stuffing.

Packing, minimum, and shipping

60 kg jute bags with container liner and desiccant, 320 bags to a 20 ft container at 19.2 MT, minimum one container per grade, with recurring volume contracted on a season schedule. Loading through Makassar, the natural port for eastern Indonesia, or Jakarta for consolidated bookings. Lead time is three to four weeks.

Robusta runs the same SNI 01-2907 defect ladder as arabica, with Grade 4 split into 4a and 4b because that is where most export volume trades. Screen size is contracted separately from grade, so any row below can ship screen 13 up or screen 16 up depending on what your roaster or extraction line is set for.

Which grade and screen do soluble plants take from Kolaka?

Most take 4a or 4b at screen 16 up, where caffeine of 2.3 to 2.8% and the narrow density spread from gravity table sorting matter more than the defect count. Grade 1 and 2 are contracted by roasters building a dark espresso base. All seven rows of the ladder are quoted, and screen is fixed separately from grade on the contract.

Most soluble contracts run at 4a or 4b, since a higher defect count costs less and the cup is rebuilt after extraction anyway. Moisture at 12.5% maximum is verified at the mill and again before stuffing, because moisture drives both yield and storage risk.

Is Kolaka robusta available under a certification programme?

Yes, 4C and Rainforest Alliance volume is available on these lots, held on the producer group certificate, with the transaction certificate number attached to the shipment and Halal (BPJPH) documentation from our side. Certified robusta volume is finite, so contract it before the June to October harvest.

Which port does this Sulawesi robusta load from?

Makassar, the natural port for eastern Indonesia, or Tanjung Priok in Jakarta when the booking consolidates several islands into one container. Lead time is three to four weeks from contract. Sailing options from Makassar are strongest toward North Asia and Southeast Asia.
