Indonesian robusta green coffee graded for espresso blend programmes

Build the body and crema first

Robusta usually makes up 10 to 30% of an espresso blend. A lower proportion adds crema and weight without dominating the cup. A higher proportion produces the heavier body, bitterness and persistence expected in traditional dark espresso, vending and office coffee.

We offer five Indonesian robusta origins. Each can be supplied green or roasted, with the grade, screen, moisture and caffeine range stated separately.

  • Lampung Sumatra: maximum body and volume

Lampung is our main volume robusta for thick crema, bitter chocolate and a heavy base.

Choose it for traditional Italian-style espresso, dark retail blends, vending and office coffee, and recurring high-volume programmes.

Caffeine runs from 2.2 to 2.7% on a dry basis. Green coffee is available from Grade 1 through Grade 6, including 4a and 4b. Contract-roasted profiles run from Agtron 36 to 48.

  • Java: smoother crema without a hard edge

Java robusta is milder than Lampung and Kolaka. It adds body and crema while allowing the arabica component to remain clear.

Choose it for smooth retail espresso, moka and household coffee, blends where dark robusta tastes too aggressive, and certified retail programmes.

Caffeine runs from 2.0 to 2.5%. It is available green in Grades 1 to 6 or contract roasted at Agtron 42 to 52. Rainforest Alliance and 4C volume is available on selected contracts.

  • Bali: a gentler island robusta

Pupuan robusta is hand sorted and carries the mildest robusta profile on our list. It adds body without the harder bitterness of a volume Lampung component.

Choose it for mild espresso blends, hospitality programmes, buyers combining Bali arabica and robusta, and smaller allocated production runs.

Caffeine runs from 2.0 to 2.4%. Green orders can begin at a half container per grade, and roasted profiles start at 500 kg.

  • Flores: a second blend base for supply security

Manggarai and Lombok robusta is clean, heavy and deliberately neutral. Buyers use it as a primary component in milder blends or qualify it as a second origin alongside Lampung or Java.

Choose it for supply diversification, medium-dark espresso, blends sold in markets where very dark robusta tastes burnt, and lower-volume island programmes.

Caffeine runs from 2.1 to 2.6%. The green is available from Grade 1 to Grade 6, and roasted profiles start at 500 kg.

  • Kolaka Sulawesi: highest caffeine and strongest body

Kolaka is the highest-caffeine coffee we carry. It produces a thick, persistent crema and a heavy bitter-chocolate base at dark roast levels.

Choose it for maximum crema from a small blend percentage, high-caffeine products, dark traditional espresso, and soluble, vending and high-volume programmes.

Caffeine runs from 2.3 to 2.8%. The green is gravity sorted and offered across Grades 1 to 6. Contract-roasted profiles run from Agtron 36 to 46.

Add arabica for character and balance

The robusta sets the weight, crema and cost position. The arabica determines most of the aroma, acidity and origin character.

  • Gayo Sumatra

Wet-hulled arabica with low perceived acidity, a heavy body and dark chocolate, cedar and spice. A natural partner for Lampung when the blend should remain recognisably Sumatran.

  • Ijen Java

Fully washed arabica with the highest screen uniformity on our list. Use it when the finished espresso needs a cleaner, more controlled profile.

  • Kintamani Bali

Washed arabica with a brighter citrus character. It lifts a mild Bali or Java robusta base and is available with Organic and Fairtrade certification on selected lots.

  • Bajawa Flores

Natural-dried arabica with fruit and sweetness. Use it to soften a medium-dark blend or give a private-label espresso a more distinctive finish.

  • Toraja Sulawesi

High-grown, wet-hulled arabica with deep body and warm spice. It works with Kolaka or Lampung when the blend needs weight without relying entirely on the robusta component.

Starting points for blend development

These are starting briefs rather than fixed recipes. Final proportions depend on the green grade, roast level, brew ratio and price position.

  • Smooth retail espresso

Java robusta for crema and body, paired with Ijen, Gayo or Kintamani arabica. Usually developed at a medium to medium-dark roast.

  • Traditional dark espresso

Lampung or Kolaka robusta paired with Gayo or Toraja arabica. Built for heavy body, persistent crema and a darker chocolate profile.

  • Vending and office coffee

Lampung or Java robusta selected for strength and consistency during longer hold times. Supplied whole bean or ground to the machine and brewing method.

  • Single-island espresso

Arabica and robusta from the same island, for example Kintamani and Pupuan from Bali, combined into one geographically coherent range.

  • Supply-secure blend

One primary robusta and one approved alternate are sampled and profiled before the contract begins. If one origin is disrupted, production can move to the alternate without restarting the complete approval process.

Buy the blend green or ready to pack

  • Green coffee for your roastery

Contract the components by grade, screen, moisture and proportion, then roast the blend at destination.

Green contracts include SNI grade and defect count, screen retention, moisture, cup score on arabica, indicative caffeine range on robusta, lot numbers and retained samples, 60 kg jute bags with barrier liners, and FOB, CFR or CIF shipping.

Green minimums are generally one 20 ft container, approximately 19.2 MT. Half-container volumes of 9.6 MT are available on selected Bali and Nusa Tenggara lots. Mixed-origin containers can be arranged when each component represents a practical loading volume.

  • Contract roasted in Indonesia

Send a target Agtron number, roast curve or reference sample. We roast the proposed components, adjust the profile through the sample stage and hold the approved recipe for repeat orders.

Roasted programmes can include blending before or after roasting, a named roast profile, components and ratios on the specification sheet, whole bean or espresso, moka and vending grind, 250 g, 1 kg, 5 kg or 10 kg valve packaging, private-label or unbranded formats, and FOB Jakarta, CIF or DAP shipping.

Most roasted programmes start at 500 kg per profile. Lampung and Kolaka volume profiles generally start at 1,000 kg. The Flores natural arabica programme can start at 300 kg. Minimums are confirmed against the complete blend rather than assumed from one component.

How profile development works

  1. 01

    Send the brief

Tell us whether you need green or roasted coffee, the target cup, approximate robusta proportion, volume, destination and price position. You can also send an existing roast curve, Agtron target or physical reference sample.

  2. 02

    Compare the components

We recommend the origins and grades that fit the brief. Green buyers receive 300 g samples with grading sheets. Roasted buyers receive sample roasts for profile approval.

  3. 03

    Approve the blend

We adjust the components, proportions or roast profile until the agreed sample is approved. The final recipe records the origins, grades, ratios, roast target and grind where applicable.

  4. 04

    Hold it for repeat orders

The named profile is assigned a green allocation. Each production run is cupped against the retained reference before release.

What is fixed on the specification

An espresso blend should be purchased against measurable specifications rather than a flavour description alone.

Depending on whether the blend is green or roasted, the specification can include:

  • Arabica and robusta proportions
  • Origin of every component
  • Green grade and defect count
  • Screen retention
  • Moisture
  • Cup-score range
  • Caffeine range
  • Roast level or Agtron target
  • Whole-bean or grind specification
  • Packaging and case count
  • Certifications
  • Production and shipment schedule
  • One named profile from approval to shipment

The approved sample, production record and shipment documents remain tied to the same named profile and lot allocation.

Samples before production

Green samples ship at 300 g per lot with the grading sheet and cup information. Roasted sample quantities depend on the profile-development programme.

Sample courier cost is credited against the first contract. Pre-shipment samples can also be sent before the container is loaded or the production batch is released.

Request espresso blend samples and pricing

Name the blend target, robusta share, volume, and destination. We will reply with starting lots, sample rounds, and current terms.

Frequently asked questions

Robusta ratios, profile matching, minimums, grinding, certification and recurring supply.

Which Indonesian robusta produces the most crema?

Lampung and Kolaka are the strongest starting points. Lampung is the main volume component for dark espresso and vending. Kolaka carries the highest caffeine range and produces maximum body at a dark roast. Java is better when the blend needs crema without a hard or strongly bitter edge.

How much robusta should an espresso blend contain?

Ten to thirty percent is the usual working range. A lower percentage adds body and crema while leaving the arabica dominant. A higher percentage creates a heavier, more traditional espresso profile. The correct proportion also depends on the robusta grade and roast level.

Can you match an espresso blend we already sell?

Yes. Send the component specification, roast curve, Agtron target or a physical reference sample. We develop the closest match through sample rounds and record the approved version as a named profile.

Can we buy the espresso blend components green and roast them ourselves?

Yes. Every arabica and robusta component is available green. We contract grade, screen, moisture and cup requirements separately so your roastery receives a reproducible raw-material specification.

Can you supply the finished espresso blend pre-ground?

Yes. Roasted blends can be ground for espresso, moka or vending at the point of packing. Tell us the machine and brew method so the grinder setting can be agreed during sample approval.

What is the minimum order for an Indonesian espresso blend?

Green orders generally begin at approximately 19.2 MT, with 9.6 MT half-container programmes available on selected Bali and Nusa Tenggara lots. Most roasted profiles start at 500 kg; Lampung and Kolaka volume profiles generally start at 1,000 kg.

Which certifications are available for espresso blend components?

Organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, 4C, ISO 22000 and Halal documentation are available on selected lots or programmes. Certification availability is confirmed against the physical coffee before quotation.

Can you supply an espresso blend on a recurring schedule?

Yes. Recurring buyers can contract a green allocation with monthly or scheduled releases. A secondary robusta origin can also be approved in advance where continuity is critical.
