Buying procedure

Grading numbers, sampling, and the steps from contract to container.

Reading the grading sheet

Both species are graded on a 300 g defect count under SNI 01-2907, from Grade 1 at 11 defect values or fewer down to Grade 6 at 151 to 225, and robusta splits Grade 4 into 4a at 45 to 60 and 4b at 61 to 80. We quote the whole ladder on every coffee and publish the exact count rather than the category, and specialty arabica carries the SCA full defect count as well. Screen retention is a separate number that tells you bean size uniformity, which drives roast evenness more than anything else, so a Grade 1 can screen 13 up or 16 up. Moisture belongs between 11 and 12.5%: below that the coffee bakes flat, above it the coffee risks mould and weight loss in transit.

How sampling works

Offer samples of 300 g green go out with the grading sheet and the cup score. Once a contract is signed, a pre-shipment sample is drawn from the actual bagged lot and cupped against the offer sample in our laboratory before the container is sealed, and you receive it too. A sealed retained sample stays with us for the life of the contract, which is what turns an arrival dispute into a cupping session rather than an argument.

Buying green or buying roasted

Buy green if you roast in house and want control of the profile and the freshest possible arrival, and expect to hold the coffee in a cool, dry warehouse below 60% relative humidity. Buy roasted if you sell packed coffee and would rather not carry roasting capacity: we roast to an agreed Agtron target, pack in one-way valve foil, and dispatch within seven days of the roast date so shelf life starts at your end of the chain, not ours.

Shipping, stowage, and arrival

Green ships in 60 kg jute bags, GrainPro-lined on specialty lots, inside a dry container with kraft lining, desiccant, and a moisture indicator card. Never reefer: condensation, not heat, is what ruins coffee in transit. Loading ports are Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, Belawan for Sumatran lots, and Makassar for Sulawesi. Plan on 18 to 24 days to Singapore and North Asia, 28 to 35 days to North Europe, and 30 to 40 days to the United States west coast.

Certified and verified programmes

Rainforest Alliance, Organic under EU and NOP rules, Fairtrade, and 4C lots are contracted against the producer group's own certificate, and the transaction certificate number travels with the shipment. Certified volume is finite and allocated at harvest, so a certified season contract has to be booked earlier than a conventional one. If your customer requires deforestation-free due diligence records for the EU market, ask for the plot-level dataset at enquiry stage rather than at stuffing.

Contract roasting and private label

The contract line runs 30 kg batches to an agreed Agtron whole bean target with the roast curve logged per batch. Packing options are 250 g and 1 kg one-way valve foil, 5 and 10 kg bulk foil for horeca and vending, and cartons made up to your case count. Print-ready artwork clears before the first production roast; unbranded stock packaging is available while your artwork is in approval.

How do I compare coffee lots across islands on this page?

Use the browse bar to open a form, species, or island landing page, then read the numbers every listing publishes: screen retention, moisture, cup score, and the grade table showing what each grade costs you in defects. Cup score separates arabica, and grade plus moisture separates robusta. Shortlist two or three, name the grade you want, and ask for the sample set rather than judging on description alone.

What are the minimum order quantities across the catalogue?

Green coffee from Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi starts at one 20 ft container, about 19.2 MT or 320 bags. Bali and Nusa Tenggara lots are allocated in smaller volume and start at half a container, 9.6 MT. Roasted coffee starts at 500 kg per profile, or 1,000 kg on the dark robusta profiles that run on a dedicated batch.

Can I order the same lot both green and roasted?

Yes. Every roasted listing is one of our green lots run on the contract line, so you can trial a green container and take retail packs of the same coffee, or the reverse. Tell us the Agtron target or send a roasted reference and we will match it on a sample batch before the production roast is scheduled.

Which documents ship with an Indonesian coffee container?

Phytosanitary certificate, ICO certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, the signed green grading sheet, the cupping score sheet, and stuffing photos with the container seal number. Certificate copies for Rainforest Alliance, Organic, Fairtrade, 4C, and Halal are matched to the lot when the coffee ships under those programmes.
